Although the International Chamber of Commerce officially replaced DDU with DAP (Delivered at Place) in modern Incoterms, the term DDU remains widely used in global logistics and e-commerce.

DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid): The seller covers origin export, international freight, and transit to the destination address. However, the buyer is responsible for import customs clearance, local taxes (VAT/GST), and import duties upon arrival.

DDP (Delivered Duty Paid): The seller assumes complete end-to-end responsibility and cost-including export clearance, international freight, customs clearance, import duties, VAT/taxes, and last-mile door delivery.

Cost Breakdown & Pricing Structures

Shipping prices quoted by Chinese suppliers or freight forwarders differ significantly between DDU and DDP.

1. DDU Shipping Cost Structure

Base Freight Rate: Calculated by weight (chargeable weight/CBM) via air, ocean, or express.

Origin Local Charges: Export declaration, trucking to port/airport, and terminal handling fees (THC).

Destination Incurred Expenses (Paid directly by Buyer): Import customs clearance fee, import duties, local VAT/GST, handling, and potential storage/demurrage fees.

2. DDP Shipping Cost Structure ("All-In" Price)

All-Inclusive Freight Quote: Combines base transport, origin/destination terminal charges, customs brokerage fees, and estimated import duties/taxes into a single per-kg or per-CBM rate.

Risk/Buffer Premium: Suppliers or forwarders often include a small surcharge (usually 5%–15% over net duties) to cover potential tariff fluctuations, exchange rate shifts, or unexpected customs inspection holds.

Key Price Drivers for China-Sourced Shipments

Shipping Mode:

Express (DHL/FedEx/UPS): Fast; usually defaults to DDU unless DDP billing service is specifically requested.

Air Freight: Priced per kilogram (chargeable weight). DDP air freight incorporates destination import taxes based on Harmonized System (HS) codes.

Sea Freight (LCL/FCL): Economical for bulk shipments. DDP ocean freight is calculated per CBM (cubic meter) or container, incorporating destination port charges and import duties.

Product Classification (HS Code): Tariff rates vary from 0% up to 25%+ depending on the commodity and destination country's trade policies.

De Minimis Thresholds: If the shipment value is below the destination country's tax exemption threshold (e.g., $800 in the US), duties are $0, making DDU and DDP price differences minimal.

Recommendations for Importers

Choose DDP if: You are an e-commerce seller (Amazon FBA, Shopify), a first-time importer, or want a hassle-free, predictable landed cost without managing local customs procedures.

Choose DDU if: You have your own local customs broker, hold an active import bond, or can leverage preferential duty rates/agreements to achieve a lower overall landed cost than the supplier's flat-rate DDP quote.
