Shipping Service Content
In general, cargo volume or weight more than 1cbm or 100kg (ocean chargeable min is 1cbm), and it consisting of multiple cartons will be shipped in containers as ocean freight. In fact, about 90 per cent of the international trade is shipped by sea.
Some keys How to choose our goods are suitable for FCL or LCL?
1. Volume(Quantity of goods) and Availability
If you have a large volume of goods that can fill an entire container, FCL is usually more cost - effective. For example, if you are shipping 20,000 toys that can fit in a 20 - foot container, FCL would be a good choice. However, if you only have a few pallets of goods, say 1,000 toys, LCL might be more appropriate as it allows you to share the container with other shippers. FCL containers shipping are often in higher demand during peak season periods, particularly before long holidays like Chinese New Year. Using FCL can make sure cargo availability and stable.
2. Speed Shipping Schedule and Flexibility
FCL offers more flexibility in terms of shipping schedule as you can decide when to ship the container based on your production and delivery needs. With LCL, you have to follow the schedule of the consolidator, which may have fixed cut - off times and sailing dates. For example,If you want to ship cargo to Savannah port(USA), but some times there is not direct LCL schedule to SAV. So we will face transit via LAX or NYC. Or waiting for enough cargo to consol direct LCL container to port. If your goods are time - sensitive, FCL could be a better option to ensure timely delivery.
3. Cost
Generally, for large shipments which volume above 12 to 15cbm,chose FCL is often cheaper that LCL. Depend on the destnation port. some port is good accept big volume LCL but some port is not welcome(consider the LCL port charge is very high). But for small - volume shipments, LCL can be more economical as you only pay for the space your goods actually use. You need to calculate the shipping costs, including terminal handling fees, LCL charges, ocean freight, destnation local charges , and other charges, for both options to make a comparison.
4. Risk of damage and loss
In FCL, since your goods are the only ones in the container, there is less risk of damage or loss due to handling and mixing with other cargo. In LCL shipments, the goods are handled(unload& loading when in warehouse and container) more frequently and are at a higher risk of being damaged or lost during the consolidation and de - consolidation processes. If your goods are fragile or valuable, FCL might be a safer choice.
What are the cost components of full container transportation?
The FCL container shipping cost mainly includes:
- Shipping cost: The core cost is determined by the route, container type (such as 20/40 foot container/high container/refrigerated container, etc.), and market supply and demand. For example, a 40 foot container from Shanghai to Los Angeles costs approximately $2500-4000.
-Surcharge: Dynamic fees such as fuel surcharge (BAF, sea freight 15% -25%), peak season surcharge (PSS, $300-800/box), congestion fee ($200-500/box), etc.
-Port miscellaneous fees: including terminal handling fees (THC, $150-300 for 20 feet, $250-500 for 40 feet) and document fees ($50-150) at the port of departure; The destination port includes unloading fees ($200-600 per 40 feet) and overdue storage fees ($50-150 per day).
- Land transportation and customs clearance : Trailer fees (vary by distance, such as $200-800 for inland transportation in the United States), customs clearance fees ($100-300 per ticket).
Note: Special container types (such as refrigerated containers) or insurance costs need to be calculated separately, and it is recommended to confirm the full package price in advance.
What are the FCL fees calculated by different ship owners?
Under normal circumstances, the quotation of each shipping company is different, depending on the shipowner's service, route, shipping schedule, cabin space, destination port free container period (7 days, 14 days, 21 days, etc.), and the miscellaneous fees of different ship owners and ports are also different. There may be some cheap shipping companies that do not include additional fees for shipping costs. So when choosing a shipping company, it is not necessarily the cheapest shipping company that is the best choice. We need to consider our own needs and overall situation when booking shipping. Q: Are the container sizes the same for each shipping company?
A: According to the standards of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), containers have uniform size specifications. Common types include 20 foot standard cabinets, 40 foot standard cabinets, 40 foot high cabinets, and 45 foot high cabinets. However, some shipping companies also use non-standard sized containers, such as the 35 foot container from the American Marine Corporation and the 45 foot and 48 foot containers from the President's Steamship Company.
Q: What is FCL shipping meaning?
A: FCL (Full Container Load) refers to the shipper using a single container to transport cargo. The cargo are packed, counted, and sealed by the shipper before being directly transported to the consignee. It is suitable for transportation scenarios where the cargo volume is sufficient to fill a full container.
Q: What is FCL shipping line?
A: A FCL shipping line refers to a fixed route and supporting logistics network specifically designed to provide sea, land, and other transportation services for FCL cargo, covering the entire process of container loading, transportation, transit, unloading, and other operations.
Q: Why is FCL shipping so expensive?
A: The high cost of FCL shipping is mainly due to the need to bear container exclusive fees, fixed route transportation costs (such as sea freight and port miscellaneous fees), equipment investment (container purchase/maintenance), and full logistics services (trailer, customs clearance, etc.), and the cost does not decrease with the allocation of cargo volume.
Q: How to check FCL shipping rate and ocean freight?
A: In general, if you only want to inquire about ocean freight, you can check on the official website of the shipping company, sign a contract with the shipowner to provide a quotation, or directly inquire about the quotation with an international freight forwarder. Chrislion International Logistics Co., Ltd, we have directly signed contracts with multiple ship owners and provided the most competitive freight rates. We can compare quotes from multiple shipping companies and provide the best service and discounted prices.
Q: Which shipping company has larger container sizes?
A: Normally, the standard container size used by each shipping company is the same, but in terms of non-standard containers, different shipping companies may have differences, so it is difficult to say which shipping company has a larger overall container size. If we only look at standard containers, no shipping company has a larger size and follows international standards. If considering non-standard containers, shipping companies with larger size containers include President Shipping Company, etc
Q: What is the difference between regular dry cargo containers and refrigerated containers?
A: Ordinary dry cargo containers are mainly used for transporting cargo without special temperature and humidity requirements, with no refrigeration equipment and simple structure; Refrigerated containers are equipped with refrigeration systems that can accurately control temperature and maintain moisture. They are suitable for perishable or temperature sensitive cargo such as fresh produce and pharmaceuticals, and have higher costs.
